Layout

The Layout panel sections in the Customizer give you pinpoint control of the site header and footer layout, as well as the positioning of many content elements in various views.

This is one of the best ways to customize your site, so it’s important to go through each of these options screen by screen!

Global

Site Layout ➝ Full-Width allows the main column to stretch the full width of the browser.

Site Layout ➝ Boxed sets the main column width to a maximum of 1144px and centers it in the browser window.

Header

Header Layout ➝ sets the global layout for the header.

Traditional places the site identity and the navigation side by site.

Centered centers both the site identity and the navigation and places the identity (or logo) above the navigation.

Navigation Below places the identity and the search bar side by side, with the navigation below those elements and aligned to one side.

Show Title/Logo On allows you to swap the positioning of the site branding in the Traditional and Navigation Below layouts.

Header Bar Layout sets the location of the Header Bar elements. In most cases, the Header Bar contains multiple elements with one element on the left and another on the right. This option allows you to flip the positioning of those elements.

Padding has an option to remove the padding beneath the site header. This will cause the content in the Main Column to begin up against the bottom edge of the site header.

Header Bar Text allows you to enter custom text as long as no custom menu has been assigned to the Header Bar Menu in the Navigation section.

Psst! You might want to enter your business contact information here — such as a phone number or business address

Optional Header Elements provides two checkboxes that allow you to choose whether to Show social icons in Header Bar and Show search field in Header Bar.

Icon Size allows you to change the size of the social icons in the header.

Footer

Number of widget areas ➝ sets the number of widget areas to show in the footer, from 0 to 4.

The Footer widget areas are displayed in equal width columns above the footer text and social icons. Note that space will only be held for these areas if there are active widgets in one of the widget areas.

Footer Layout ➝ sets the overall layout for the Footer.

Traditional displays the Footer text on one side and the social icons on the other.

Centered centers both pieces of content and displays the Footer text above the social icons.

Padding has an option to remove the padding above the site footer. This will narrow the gap between the end of content in the Main Column and the site footer.

Footer Text allows you to enter some custom text (such as copyright information, contact information, or whatever else you’d like) in the Footer.

Show social icons under Optional Footer Elements allows you to display social icons in the footer.

Icon Size allows you to change the size of the social icons in the footer.

Blog (Posts Page), Archives, Search Results

The Header, Footer, Sidebars ➝ allows you to hide the header and footer and display a left or right sidebar on your blog or posts page. (Activating a sidebar also activates the sidebar area in the Sidebars & Widgets section.)

Featured Images ➝ sets the style for displaying the featured image.

Post header will display the image above the post title.

Thumbnail will display the image using the thumbnail dimensions (defaults to 150×150) below the post title and floated left in the content.

None will cause the thumbnail to not be displayed.

Featured Images Alignment ➝ lets you align your images center, left, or right.

Post Date display options are ➝

Absolute — as in “October 22, 2014”

Relative — to today’s date, as in “1 Week Ago”

None — no post date displayed

Post Date Location ➝ controls where the date displays.

Top — above your entry title

Before content — below your entry title but above the content

Post footer — below your content with the rest of your meta data

Post Author ➝ sets the display style for the author byline.

With avatar displays a circular image next to the byline.

Without avatar displays only the byline.

None hides the author byline completely.

Post Author Location ➝ controls where the author displays.

Top — above your entry title

Before content — below your entry title but above the content

Post footer — below your content with the rest of your meta data

Content gives you the option to Generate excerpts automatically. Leaving this box unchecked will display your full posts on the Blog (Posts Page).

Post Meta allows you to choose whether or not to Show categories and Show tags on your Blog.

Comment Count displays the number of comments on each post with the following options: With icon, With text, or None.

Comment Count Location controls where the Comment Count displays: Top (above your entry title), Before content (below your entry title but above the content), or Post footer (below your content with the rest of your meta data).

Posts

The Posts section has all the same options as the Blog, Archives, and Search Results sections above, except that it doesn’t have an option to generate excerpts. Single posts will always display their full content.

Pages

In addition to the controls from the previous sections, Page Title allows you to hide the page title on your pages. You can also set the locations of your Featured Images, Post Date, Post Author, and Comment Count.

Shop, Product

With Make Plus and either the WooCommerce or the Easy Digital Downloads plugin activated, two additional sections become available in the Layout panel. The Shop section provides layout options for views that show product lists or grids, as well as e-commerce utility pages such as shopping cart and checkout pages. The Product section provides layout options for individual product views.
