Photography 2.0

by Zack Tollman on February 12, 2013 / 18 comments

The Photography theme has been a hallmark of The Theme Foundry’s collection since we first released it nearly three years ago. It has stood the test of time and continues to be one of our most popular themes. Today, we are excited to usher in the next generation of Photography with the release of version 2.0.

This is a free update for all existing Photography customers. Please be sure to read the update instructions before you dive in.

What’s New?

We decided to completely rewrite the Photography codebase. WordPress has matured significantly since Photography 1.0 and we wanted to take advantage of the latest and greatest features by building Photography 2.0 from the ground up.

At first glance, you’ll notice the subtle visual enhancements that give Photography a needed makeover. From the refined image highlights to the understated background pattern, Photography maintains its core aesthetics, but gently improves some of the rougher edges. Additionally, Photography is now responsive and ready to showcase your photos on all of your favorite devices.

Better gallery management

In addition to visual changes, we’ve made galleries significantly easier to manage. WordPress 3.5 introduced a completely redesigned media manager that complicated Photography’s gallery management. We have overhauled and smoothed out the gallery functionality to work more intuitively with WordPress 3.5.

We also added support for two popular requests — multiple Gallery pages and portrait photos. Feature as many Gallery pages as you want and display the thumbnails in portrait or landscape mode!

Cleaner code

A theme should be just as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. We took the time to bring everything up to the latest WordPress standards and dramatically increase speed and performance. We also re-wrote the Flickr integration to work with the new Flickr API and OAuth 2.0.

Overall, it’s a better theme

We love Photography. It is an important part of our theme collection and we don’t want it to be just good; we want it to be great! We think we did just that with version 2.0 and are really excited to get it in your hands. Go ahead and update now.

Hi, I have purchased this photography version 1 on wordpress.com. What do I need to do to upgrade to the V2.0? Can someone give me a step-to-step instruction because I can’t seem to find a way.
    Much appreciated! Thanks

    Terry

    Hi Terry!

Good question. You don’t need to do anything to get the update over on WordPress.com. Your site will eventually be updated to Photography 2.0 automatically. But, the update first needs to be reviewed and approved on WordPress.com, which can take awhile.

    Hi all at Theme Foundry

Great update – love the responsive version! Getting used to the non-responive version – it’s taken a little time to get the gist of it – I think I’ve got it mastered.

    Cheers, Marcus

I happened across your site via an advert link box (so they do “work” sometimes!) and this theme looks perfect — but here’s the twist: I’d like to use it for non-photographic art … so there’d be a lot of aspect variations.

Do you have any thoughts on that? Thanks!

  7. Drew Strojny

    Hi Cheryl!

Good question. You can use different aspect ratios on the individual gallery page, but you can’t use different aspect ratios everywhere on the site. Hopefully this clears things up a bit. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to contact us.

I like it! My blog looks better on all devices: laptop, wide screen, phone and pad. I haven’t redone or added galleries but install was uneventful…my favorite kind!

    Thanks.

  9. Drew Strojny

Glad to hear it Elizabeth! Thanks for letting us know :-)

    Hi Drew
Version 2 is really great! Thanks a lot!! – Question: Do you have any change list form version to version? I would like to know the differences between the update-versions. Thank you

  11. Zack Tollman

    Hi Beat!

We have a changelist in the includes folder in each theme. The file is titled CHANGLELOG.txt. Currently, we do not have a public place to publish this information, but we have been thinking about a way to do that.

Also, feel free to ask any questions you have about updates in the forum and we will be happy to answer them!

    Hi:
I’ve upgraded to 2.0 and it seems to be working well. Is it possible to add existing galleries to new post. Existing galleries seems to have been added to previous existing posts during the upgrade but how can I add these existing galleries to new gallery type posts I create.
    Arend

    Hi Arend!

This question may involve a lot of work to get resolved. Can you head over to the Help Center to ask the question in the forums?

  14. Drew Strojny

    Hi José,

When you buy the theme on WordPress.com, you need to buy for each site you want to use it with. Hope this helps clear things up.

  15. Sally

    Hi Theme Foundry,
I’m planning to make a photography website through WordPress.com. I’ve really liked your Photography theme and have been thinking of purchasing it, but like the new 2.0 version even better. I know that if using WordPress.com I will need to go to their site to purchase it. However, their version still shows as the first version of the Photography theme. Can I purchase 2.0 through them, or do I have to purchase Version 1 and wait for them to upgrade it?
    Kind regards, Sally

    Hi Sally!

It’s great to hear that you are interested in Photography!

We always sell our themes on WordPress.com and on our website; however, there can sometimes be a delay getting the theme on WordPress.com as it has to go through a rigorous process to be listed in their marketplace. We are currently in that process and hope to have it for sale there soon.

You certainly could purchase Photography 1.0 on WordPress.com; however, I cannot, at this point, give you much information on the upgrade process to 2.0 as that is one of the details we are still working out.

As soon as we know when it will be on WordPress.com, we will get the word out.

    Thanks for your interest!
